Summary of Google Gemini now lets you remove the visible watermark: What you gain and what stays hidden

  • Google added a new Media Watermark setting that lets you remove visible watermarks from images, videos, and music you create with Gemini.
  • The setting is found in the Gemini app under Settings and is toggled On by default. Turning it off removes the visible tag from future creations.
  • Invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata remain embedded in the background even when the visible watermark is removed.
  • The watermark removal option is not available in China, South Korea, or EU countries, where watermarks are required by law.
  • The change is rolling out over the next few days and applies to Gemini Spark, 3.7 Flash, and other recent versions.

If you have ever created an image, video, or song with Google Gemini, you have likely noticed a small tag stamped in the corner of your work. That visible watermark was Google's way of marking AI-generated content, and for many users, it was an annoyance that made the output feel less personal or polished.

Starting this week, Google is giving you the choice to turn that visible watermark off. The new setting is called Media Watermark, and it is rolling out to Gemini users over the next few days. Whether you are using Gemini Spark, 3.7 Flash, or another recent version, the option should appear in the Settings menu soon.

This change comes directly from user feedback. Josh Woodward, Google’s VP leading Gemini, AI Studio, and Google Labs, asked users what their biggest complaints were. Removing the visible watermark landed among the top ten most popular requests. Now Google has answered.

How to remove the visible watermark

What this means for Google Gemini now lets you remove the visible watermark

Turning off the visible watermark is simple. Here is how to do it:

  • Open the Gemini app on your phone, tablet, or computer.
  • Look for the Settings option in the left navigation bar.
  • Scroll down until you see Media Watermark near the bottom. It should be the third-to-last option.
  • Tap or click the toggle to switch it from On to Off.

That is all it takes. Once you turn it off, any new image, video, or music creation you generate with Gemini will not carry a visible mark. The setting is off by default when you turn the feature on, meaning Google still applies watermarks unless you actively choose to remove them.

This applies to all types of content you can make with Gemini, including images created with Nano Banana, videos made with Omni, and song lyrics generated with Lyria.

Invisible markers stay no matter what

Before you rush to toggle that setting, there is an important catch. Removing the visible watermark does not remove all watermarks. Google is still embedding two types of invisible markers in every creation:

  • SynthID watermarks— These are digital patterns that are invisible to the human eye but can be detected by special software. Google developed SynthID to help identify AI-generated content even when no visible mark is present.
  • C2PA metadata— This is a technical standard for digital provenance. It stores information about how and when the content was created right inside the file itself. Apps and services that support C2PA can read this data and tell you that an image or video came from an AI tool.

Google says these invisible markers will always stay embedded in the background, no matter what you choose for the visible watermark. That means anyone who knows how to check can still confirm that your content was made with AI, even if it looks clean on the surface.

A rule that depends on where you live

There is another restriction worth knowing about. The ability to remove the visible watermark does not work in every country. Google requires visible watermarks by law in some places, and that rule overrides your personal settings.

The countries where the watermark cannot be removed include:

  • China
  • South Korea
  • Countries in the European Union

If you live in or are traveling in any of these regions, the Media Watermark setting may still appear in your menu, but turning it off may not actually remove the mark. Google designed this change to comply with local regulations, so users in those areas may need to wait for legal updates before they can enjoy watermark-free creations.

What this means for your other Google apps

Google Gemini is not just a standalone app. It is integrated into many other Google services you likely use every day. The ability to remove visible watermarks may affect how your creations look when you share them across these platforms.

If you use mobile apps that rely on Gemini for content generation, such as image editors or note-taking tools with AI features, those apps will also respect your Media Watermark setting. The same goes for web-based tools like Google Labs experiments or AI Studio.

For those who care about mobile security and digital privacy, knowing that invisible watermarks stay embedded is important. It means your content carries a permanent digital fingerprint that can be traced back to the AI tool, regardless of where you share it. This is not necessarily bad — it helps prevent misuse and fake content — but it is something to be aware of.

Your choice, but not a complete escape: Google Gemini What

The new Media Watermark setting is rolling out now and should be available to everyone within days, according to Google. Once the update reaches your app, you can decide right away whether you want that little tag on your future creations.

This is a meaningful change for creators who use Gemini to make social media graphics, video thumbnails, music drafts, or any other content where a polished look matters. It also highlights how Google listens to user feedback when it comes to its AI tools.

At the same time, it shows that Google is committed to responsible AI use. By keeping invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata in place, the company ensures that AI-generated content can still be identified, even if it looks no different from something made by a human.
